A (Temporary) Victory for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe: With Hopes that it Shall be Sustained...

Congratulations to those who bravely demonstrated against a 1,100 mile pipeline built by Energy Transfer Partners LP, which endangers Native Americans' sacred sites near Lake Oahe.

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that 3 federal agencies halted work on the $3.8 billion pipeline that will cover 4 states after a federal judge denied an injunction sought by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe (Maher, K. & A. Sider, 9/10-11/2016 US Agencies Order Pipeline Work Halted, WSJ, p. 3).

The Department of Justice, the Interior Department, and the Army Corp of Engineers issued a joint statement that you can read here: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/joint-statement-department-justice-department-army-and-department-interior-regarding-standing

The statement says the agencies will investigate whether Native Americans' views were adequately solicited, as required by NEPA because the tribe claims the pipeline threatens their fresh water supply and important cultural sites.

It is a victory, albeit temporarily...
